What Folks Have to Say about Their 1:1 Coaching Sessions

A beautiful dark-skinned Black woman with black hair, burgundy lip stick and subtle eye shadow to match, smiles wisely

“In 2023, I was very fortunate to be gifted an opportunity to have 6 coaching sessions with Tara Topper from Moonshot EdVentures, which was a support for entrepreneurs and leaders in education. Before having the opportunity to work with Tara, I was experiencing extreme anxiety about whiteness, white fragility, and white supremacy in the workplace where I was the only person of color unless I hired other persons of color. It was a very isolating space, and while completing a doctorate, I was afraid of a shift I could feel, but not able to process. Tara helped me understand anxiety and how new beginnings manifest in our lives.

While taking a short hiatus from our regular sessions to graduate and during a leadership shift at work, I abruptly had to seek her support as I was experiencing extreme bias, microaggressions, and power dynamics with a new leader who I felt was openly being allowed to mistreat me at work. Not only did Tara help me recognize that I was not crazy and in fact probably experiencing work abuses, she worked to empower me to believe in myself and to recognize how leaders can abuse their power at work. Tara spent a lot of time helping me understand the empowerment I possessed and had very real conversations about what my life could be since I would not be able to escape white supremacy in organizational structures, race battle fatigue, or power abuses as long as I was at the mercy of others. She had critical conversations with me about destigmatizing anxiety and how to manage it. I have come a long way in the 18 months she has worked with me. I have come to understand and actively work on building for myself and feeling empowered by my own leadership abilities, skills, expertise, and character. I am actively working on building my own businesses, and Tara shares resources, tips, ideas, and active planning to help me move towards this goal. She shares with me her experiences and helps me process my personal route. I feel very blessed to have met a person who sees me and understands, assures me that my experiences are real, and helps me plan for a future that I drive without the dependence of white standards and structures in organizations that ruin people like me. I am excited for what is to come and her continued support and guidance."

“Before working with Tara, I was an absolute mess when it came to work life balance. My relationships were in disarray. I was using unhealthy skills to cope and didn’t have a good balance of where I was emotionally. I was driving from place to place and working for white women that didn’t understand who I was as a person and didn’t fall in line with my moral compass. It became a situation where I felt like why was I even doing this anymore? I was extending myself beyond belief for women who did not value me or value what I brought to the table . Thats when I finally decided to start my own business. Thanks to Tara. I was able to navigate better work relationships with the people around me, learn how to move through authenticity, and take better care of myself. Through working with Tara I've learned how to be accountable for myself, as well as hold space and stay motivated when it comes to the ebbs & flows of owning my own business. Now that I'm entering my third year of owning my business, I'm able to better communicate my needs as a business as well as a person. I've learned how to better understand my community and what their needs are, and take care of my family and hold space for them with a better balance of my own personal life. I went from having no employees to seven employees to now having 18 and I can't imagine what kind of entrepreneur I would have been without the proper skills that I learned through this process. Highly recommend.”

~ Markie, Dance Studio Owner

“Without Tara I would still be at a nonprofit community mental health center with the belief that this was the only way to serve the population I wanted to work with. Her integration of intersectionality was really the push that helped me let go of some fears that were driving my decision because she was able to hear me, validate my realities and systemic challenges, and really get to the root of my fears to help me care for it rather than numb or compartmentalize it. Since then, she's supported my professional growth and business development as a supervisor and consultant. I've been able to serve the population I'm passionate about, meet financial goals I didn't think would be within reach for my career, and actually have a work-life balance that contributes to my overall wellbeing.”
